This top even retains its original gel coat and the checkerboard label logo is as perfect as is possible to find.
The first generation of the Eames shell chairs were all arm versions and are known as the 'rope edge' a helpful way of spotting the 1st generation tops. A rope used in the original mold left the 'rope' impression on the underside of the edges around the chair. The large checkerboard logo sticker too denotes the first generation model.
As a rope edge first generation production, the date of this chair likely stands between 1950 and 1952
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. Upholstered version were introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
This fiberglass shell is in what can only be described as mint condition for its age. The chair comes complete with second hand RAR base.
A near perfect label and shell, the visible fibers in this amazing first edition are stunning.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Zenith plastics were the first production manufacturer for Herman Miller of the Eames shells. A 1st generation is likely always 4 or 5 star but one as high quality as this are impossible to find and therefore this is as good an Eames investment as you can make.
