1 x Zenith Vintage Original Eames 1st Generation Rope Edge Arm On Original RAR Rocker Base
One of the holy grail finds is a very 1st generation Eames Shell chair (made by Zenith Plastics) on an equally original RAR rocking base, a near impossible find! In its found condition, this fantastic piece of design history stands testament to the very best and most popular of the shell series.
The first generation of the Eames shell chairs were all arm versions and are known as the 'rope edge' a helpful way of spotting the 1st generation tops. A rope used in the original mold left the 'rope' impression on the underside of the edges around the chair. The large checkerboard logo sticker too denotes the first generation model.
As a rope edge first generation production, the date of this chair likely stands between 1950 and 1952
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. Upholstered version were introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
The fiber shell is in a really good vintage found condition. The chair has aged but has done so in keeping with its 55 year existence. As well as the original RAR base, the chair still retains its 1st generation 'checkboard' Zenith plastics label. There are 3 of the 4 lugs on the rar base in tact, we can weld a replacement for the 4th.
As pictured in the images, 1st generation Zenith Eames shells are denoted by the rope edge around the underside of the chair lip.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Zenith plastics were the first production manufacturer for Herman Miller of the Eames shells. A 1st generation is likely always 4 or 5 star but one on an original RAR base is 5 star+ and is an exceptional find for any collection.
