Black Herman Miller Vintage Eames PKC Contract Chair
A well-loved vintage Eames PKC swivel contract chair for Herman Miller is an iconic version of the ‘wire chair’ variant of the Eames shell chair. Designed at the point when ‘light and airy’ design was reaching its peak, this striking version of the coveted shell chair is finished in black powder-coating and sits upon it’s original, first edition Lounge Chair inspired contract base. This base was only produced up until 1957 when it changed to the more curvaceous version we see which is echoed in the Aluminium groups design.
An attractive alternative to the fiberglass shells, this version was introduced with the same versatility in mind, a selection of bases to suit any occasion and a multitude of upholstered finishes stretching over the wire frame. Inspired by the weave technique used in baskets, the introduction of a metal wire chair increased the diversity of the Eames chair options which also included the plywood collection.
The wire frame construction is in good vintage condition. There are some small signs of natural aging – expected with it being over 50 years old – but the frame is still as strong as the day it was produced.
This is a great example of an early version of this chair, with its early base this is in good condition it is a rare find!
The Eames wire chair is just as coveted as the fiberglass shell chairs, being of the same family. Vintage versions with their original upholstery can command a good investment value. This version being a great example of an original PKC chair should be a moderate investment piece.
