Upholstered versions of the iconic Eames shells were designed with the assistance of the famous Alexander Girard who headed Herman Miller’s design department. He used a variety of fabrics and a wide range of colours to create an extremely diverse collection and versatile upholstered version of the shells that, much like the standard fiberglass shells, could be used in almost any environment imagined.
The original white shell is in very good vintage condition whilst the light green hop-sack upholstery shows no signs of lifting or tears.
The ‘S’ inside the circle indicates the shell is from Herman Miller’s Summit Prime factory.
The wide variety of Eames shells that were produced means the investment value for one particular shell is affected by so many factors. Collectors look for features such as the age, condition and colour of the shell along with the factory of origin to understand its rarity. There are many other aspects that play a part, but these are a good place to start. This particular shell is in very good condition and, with its rather unique finish, it should prove to be a good investment piece.
