Purple 'Two-Tone' Herman Miller Vintage Eames Upholstered RAR White Arm Shell Chair
This is a rare example of a Herman Miller original Eames white arm shell with a ‘two-tone’ purple upholstery with fabric seat pad designed by Alexander Girard. Sat upon its dark wood, black frame RAR base this arm shell would make a fantastic addition to any home or chosen space.
The early versions of these tops were designed as early as the 1940s and once they had begun production in the early 1950s and their popularity grew, Charles and Ray approached the famous Alexander Girard to help design a multitude of upholstered coverings for the iconic shells. This particular example sports a vinyl backrest and arms and a fabric seat pad giving the top a unique finish.
The ‘two-tone’ upholstered finish of this arm shell makes it a more unique version of the extremely popular shell chairs and is in good vintage condition,
There is a small cut on the top of the back rest in the vinyl but the price does reflect this.
The CPi logo is the Century Plastics company, the company founded by the original engineers Irv Green and Sol Fingerhut after Zenith Plastics was bought out by Herman Miller.
The Eames Shell Chairs are a much coveted design piece and their investment value is determined by many various factors. The age of the shell, its colour and condition along with the factory of origin all play a role along with the originality of the base it is sat upon. This particular top is a unique finish and with having the rare ‘CPi’ logo should prove to be a very respectable investment piece.
