Orange Herman Miller Original Eames LAR Arm Shell Chair
A beautiful rarity. This is an original Eames LAR low arm chair for Herman Miller in a well-aged orange and on an original ‘Cats Cradle’ base. This all original chair is in great vintage condition and truly embodies the versatility of the Eames shell chair collection.
Designed as an extra available option for these diverse chairs, the low base means the comfortable Eames arm shell becomes a comfortable lounge style chair which is compact as well as stylish. Interestingly, the style of the base was actually used for the very first rocking bases – meaning they had a horizontal bar running across the front of the frame – but this was quickly changed to the style we know today after complaints that it caught on people’s legs.
The shell has aged well. Whilst it has faded slightly, common for orange shells, it still has a distinctive colour and is in great vintage condition.
The original LAR base is in good vintage condition too with only some natural signs of wear.
The double triangle logo indicates this is from the General American Transport Company’s factory – a factory, it is believed, which was used for a short period of time before Herman Miller moved production to Summit Plastics and Cincinnati.
The investment value of Eames shells depends on so many varying factors. The age, condition, colour and even originality of the base can all help determine the investment value of the shell. Orange is a slightly more common version of the iconic shell, but with coupled with the original LAR base, this chair should be a reasonable investment piece.
