Orange Herman Miller Original Eames Upholstered RAR White Arm Shell Chair
An original Herman Miller white Eames arm shell flaunting its Alexander Girard designed orange fabric upholstery on dark wood rocker base make for a great combination. A popular version today, the upholstered Eames shell collection boast added comfort and style from the Girard designed fabrics and colours they have.
Charles and Ray’s iconic fiberglass shell chairs began with prototypes in the late 1940s and, due to costs, began production as the arm variant only in 1950. As popularity and sales grew, they were able to introduce what is known as the side variant in roughly 1952/53. As time went by, new colours became available and, as modern design really started to gain momentum, Herman Miller approached their design director, Alexander Girard, to help commission a large selection of upholstered finishes for the shells.
The upholstered finish on this arm top is in good condition with only a clean required, there are no lifts or tears. An hours cleaning on the fabric will have this top back to their former glory.
The dark wood RAR base has a natural patina giving this used base a distinctively attractive finish.
The crescent and star logo under the seat top indicates the shell is from the Cincinnati factory.
Shell chairs, much like all of the Eames products, are always sought-after. Their investment value is determined by many different factors but a good place to start is the age, condition and factory the shell came from and also, due to earlier versions only coming in certain colours, the colour of the shell. This particular example is in good condition with its original Alexander Girard upholstery; it should steadily increase in value as time goes by.
