Robin’s Egg Pair (2) Herman Miller Vintage Eames DSR Side Shell Chairs
A pair of vintage, very rare and desirable Eames Herman Miller robin’s egg side shells on a lovely used chrome DSR bases are perfect chairs for any occasion. Arguably one of the most coveted colours for the shell chair collection, these are amazing examples of this rare colour and they have aged exceptionally well, retaining a strong colour.
These brilliant examples need little introduction since it is possibly the most sought-after colour used on the iconic shell chairs. The fiberglass chairs have always been popular and their versatility is increasing this year by year.
The earlier shells had a base colour and displayed the wondrous texture of the ‘fibers’ in the shell. Later versions of the shells, introduced by Herman Miller, could also be bought with an upholstered cover, from vinyl to fabric. To create the amazing patterns on the fabric finishes, Charles and Ray looked to the esteemed Alexander Girard to design them.
The chairs are in very good condition considering their age. They have had a relatively hard life, but much of what can be seen on the images is dirt which is being carefully removed to uncover the wonderful colour beneath. There are some consistent marks around their edging, which is expected with being 50+ years old.
The ‘C’ with the star logo indicates these are original Herman Miller shells produced by their Cincinnati factory.
The investment value of these beautiful chairs depends on many factors: the age and condition of the shell, the rarity of its colour, the age of the base and where the shell was produced. Whilst all of the shell chairs are viable investments, these pieces rate higher due to their colour and rarity.
