Terracotta Herman Miller Vintage Original Eames Upholstered Side DSW Chair
Want an iconic and original alternative for a dining or living chair? How about an original Eames and Herman Miller side shell with Girard’s terracotta fabric? Sat upon its dark wood DSW base, this iconic shell has been lovingly clothed in one of Alexander Girard’s more unusual and yet striking naugahyde fabrics that only helps accentuate the versatility not only in the shells design but in style too.
The Eames shells’ history has been well documented, from their beginning in 1950 with only the arm shell to their much praised versatility being encouraged by the introduction of new base variants. Alexander Girard, the lead designer for Herman Miller, was commissioned to help design fabric and vinyl finishes for the arm and side shells available for both contract and general use. The designs he produced were vast and there are many variations of colour and fabric finish which emerged over the years.
This particular top is in very good condition for its age, there are no signs of cracks or dents whilst the naugahyde upholstery has no lifting or tears.
The used DSW base is in good condition.
The ‘S’ inside the circle indicates this shell originates from Herman Miller’s Summit Prime factory in Michigan.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Excellent examples of a lovely combination such as this represents a good investment prospect.
