White And Grey Herman Miller Original Vintage Eames DSW Side Shell Chair
The ‘two-tone’ Eames side shell chair for Herman Miller was one of the first examples of the original shells used for upholstered versions of the iconic chair. Whilst not exclusively used for this, the painted back shells, both in arm and side variant, were then covered with a ‘slip on’ upholstery cover which meant the customer to change the colour of the upholstery whenever the wanted. The upholstery application was soon changed with the finish being sealed to the shell and the painted back steadily fazed out to use the colour of the shell instead.
The painted back shells, once the cover was removed, would reveal a perfect coloured fiberglass top – which sometimes could be a rare colour – leaving an attractive finish to the chair. This particular version is a great example of a white shell and with its grey back, it really conveys the versatility these chairs are famed for.
The shell is in great vintage condition, the white shell is in good condition with no chips or cracks and the grey painted back is good to with only some natural signs of aging.
The used DSW base is in good condition with only the wear expected with being used.
The Eames shells’ are a highly coveted asset with original Zenith shells being excellent investment pieces. As with most things, the age, condition and colour all affect the investment value of the shell.
