Yellow Herman Miller Original Vintage Eames RAR Arm Shell Chair
This vintage original Herman Miller and Eames yellow arm shell with grey painted back and on a used light wood RAR base is a unique combination. This highly fibrous yellow top was one of the original ‘two-tone’ variants with its matt grey sprayed back creating an alternative version to this iconic arm chair. These would traditionally have an upholstered cover held on by wires over the seat front, however, these were prone to falling off; this problem was resolved with the introduction of the vinyl seal edging which was used on the upholstered chairs.
The success of these chairs has been proven by the continuous production time they have seen. From their origin in the 1950s, new bases, upholstered variants and even adapted variants such as the La Fonda ensured these chairs have cemented themselves in the history books with their iconic and versatile design. Upholstered versions were introduced in the 1950s when Alexander Girard was commissioned to help design them and new bases found their way under the shells over the many years they have been produced.
The shell is in good vintage condition, there are some small chips and marks in the paint commonplace with age but the front of the shell is unmarked.
The two triangles on the underside of the shell indicates this is from Herman Miller's Summit Plastics factory.
The investment value of the shell top series depends upon many factors such as the age of the shell, the age of the base, the rarity of the shell colour, the factory of origin and, of course, the condition. The overall good condition of this shell with the vibrancy of the yellow and painted grey back means this should be a reasonable investment piece.
