Yellow Herman Miller Vintage Eames EA178 Loose Cushion Armchair Glide Base
The Eames EA178 Loose Cushion Armchair produced by Herman Miller is a perfect desk or lounge chair, especially this vintage, greige shell, glide base version. Whilst bearing resemblance to the Eames Arm Shell chair, this piece used a different method of production to construct it. Its polyester shell and upholstered finished were combined using urethane foam filling which gives the chair the cushioned feel. This striking example of greige and yellow and still sat upon its original glide base gives the chair a unique look which will be a bold statement in any room it is placed.
The Eames’s began the ‘shell chair’ design back in the 1940s and, with the help of Herman Miller, the arm shell was produced in 1950 with the side shell soon following in 1952/1953. This particular piece was a later adaptation designed with the idea of creating a more comfortable desk chair than could be found at the time. The arm shell already brought comfort, the addition of the cushioned fabric with the extended back added to this to create a versatile desk chair which could easily double-up as a lounge chair.
The integrity of the chair is complete, shell is in good vintage condition and the original naugahyde finish has no cuts or tears in it, though some slight lifting under the cushion. The original cushion is in good condition to.
There is some natural wear around the edge but this is consistent with age.
The EA178 chair comes in many different forms, be it colour of fabric, the fabric itself or the base it is on. All of these factors play a role when it comes to the investment aspect of this chair. The earlier the shell and the originality of the fabric is still original are main contributors. This particular chair is completely original, so it should prove to be a worthy investment piece.
