Yellow Harry Bertoia Vintage Knoll Fiberglass Side Chair
An unusual and yet striking version of this iconic Harry Bertoia and Knoll Side Chair as it has the rare fiberglass seat top instead of the well-known wire. This particular finish was only produced for a year in 1963 and was numbered 427, being the fiberglass version of the iconic wire construction. This chair is very hard to find, especially in pairs, due to their very limited time of production.
Harry Bertoia was approached by Knoll to design furniture for hospitals, but he preferred working with healthy bodies. As a sculptor, he was fascinated by the form of the human body, something we today call ergonomics, and developed furniture that aided the natural shape.
He is well-known for using metal wire, which the well-known Side chairs are constructed from, though a few fiberglass variants of his work, the Diamond Chair for example, were produced for a limited time. The reason for this is unknown, but this has helped maintain interest in these chairs.
The fiberglass shell is in great vintage condition with no cracks, there are some slight marks common with age, but a good clean will remove these.
The paint on the base has a natural vintage look with some marks on them, price reflects this.
Harry Bertoia’s work is growing in interest. As his work is being more recognised, the interest value of his pieces is steadily rising. Standard wire versions of these classic chairs have retained interest, but as rare examples such as these should prove to be a valuable investment as the popularity of Bertoia’s designs increases further.
