Zenith Vintage Original Eames 2nd Generation Navy Blue Arm Rocking Chair
The dark navy blue Eames arm shell for Zenith/Herman Miller is one of our favourites due to the incredible intricate white visible fibers on the darkened shell. This example is no exception and the gorgeous fiber pattern is visually stunning.
The Eames shell series chairs really do not need any introduction. With early prototypes beginning in the late 1940's, production began on the Eames' dream of 'chairs for the masses' in 1950 with the arm and then the sides later in 1952/53. The original and vintage fiberglass chairs were so versatile and so modern that they only increase in popularity as the years go by.
Fiberglass originals always have a base colour and gorgeous 'visible' fibers in the shell itself. Upholstered version were introduced by Herman Miller a little later on using fabrics and textiles designed by the esteemed designer Alexander Girard.
In a really nice vintage condition.
This fiberglass shell is in a lovely vintage condition with slight fading on the seat part. The chair comes complete with second hand later RAR base.
This rare 2nd generation Zenith shell is considered a crossover. Herman Miller had now taken over the operation of producing the shells however during the crossover period they were still being made at Zenith in California on behalf of HM. The 3 dots with reverse Z denote the Zenith origin and this sits alongside the Herman Miller paper label.
Eames Shell Chairs vary from 1 to 5 stars for investment. The reasons depend on so many factors but mainly the condition, the rarity of the colour, the originality of the base, the age and of course the maker are those that determine. Zenith plastics were the first production manufacturer for Herman Miller of the Eames shells. A 1st generation is likely always 4 or 5 star but one as high quality as this are impossible to find and therefore this is as good an Eames investment as you can make.
